Dr Harriet Salisbury, who completed her PhD in Creative Writing at Roehampton last year, has won a prize in a prestigious new writing competition organised by The London Society. The theme of the competition was Love Letters to London, and Dr Salisbury's prose poem London Still Sparkles was judged third in the open category. Judges commended her entry for its cleverness and the inclusion of 'a bit of grit in the oyster' in its portrayal of the city.

During her doctoral studies at Roehampton Dr Salisbury wrote an illustrated young adult novel set in the Victorian East End, examining working-class agency, collective action and the success of the 1888 matchgirls' strike. She was supervised by Professor Ian Haywood and Dr Ariel Kahn, but now is a dissertation supervisor herself to students on our MA Creative Writing.

All the winning entries can be seen on a downloadable booklet on the London Society's website, which is also available to purchase.
