The Research and Knowledge Exchange Centre for History and Classics is the principal hub for research on past human societies and cultures within the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Our research is distinguished by chronological breadth, ranging from Classical Greece to modern Africa, well as thematic depth, encompassing everything from the study of medicine and gender to that of war and politics.

We are an outward facing community, and the Centre provides a platform for our members to engage a range of external partners in impact and knowledge exchange activities. For more on our external partnerships, see our Case Studies.

The activities of the Centre are focussed on a broad interdisciplinary theme, and the inaugural theme for 2021-23 is ‘inequality’. This theme brings together the research interests of our members and speaks to the challenges and opportunities of our global, national and local present. The theme of inequality will shape our research, knowledge exchange and impact priorities for the next two years.

The Centre organises a wide range of events from a regular seminar series, through conferences, workshops and postgraduate events, to public lectures and film-screenings. It works closely with the MA in History and the MRes in Classics and Ancient History, and provides a home for all doctoral students in History and Classics, including those funded by our Technē AHRC Doctoral Training Partnership. It also hosts postdoctoral fellows on a range of grants from the UKRI and other major funding bodies such as the Leverhulme Trust and Wellcome Trust.
