Department of Social Sciences hosts international conference on education for active citizenship

Delegates from across the world will gather at the University of Roehampton for an innovative conference aimed at finding out how to increase political engagement for all young people regardless of their social backgrounds from the 26th to the 27th of September.
Professor Bryony Hoskins from the Department of Social Sciences is leading the conference and the two day event which is one of the first ever to share best practices on evaluating a variety of Global citizenship programmes including for UNICEF and UNESCO and Robert Bosch European Citizenship education programmes.
These education programmes aim to provide young people with engaging learning opportunities to gain knowledge, skills, attitudes and values including respect for diversity, empathy and participation skills that enable young people to engage and have their voice heard.
Professor Bryony Hoskins said “Little is known on the effectiveness of these education programmes in particular for disadvantaged young people and this conference will bring together state of the art evaluation tools and results that will enable to us to identify effective teaching and learning practices on active citizenship. It is really important to support young people in participating in shaping the society’s future wherever they live.”
The conference will be opened by Provost Stephen Drinkwater and the Mayor of Wandsworth, Councillor Jane Cooper.
The conference will also mark the launch of Professor Hoskins and co-author Dr Jan Germen Janmaat new book Education, Democracy and Inequality about the national education system and how to help young people engage in politics and citizenship regardless of their backgrounds.
The Department of Social Sciences is ranked 6th in the UK for the impact of our Social Sciences research (Research Excellence Framework 2014). The Crucible Centre of Human Rights at the University of Roehampton has a long standing commitment to social justice and human rights, and the support of positive citizenship, particularly through education contributes towards this.
