The Roehampton Student Awards, which took place on May 29, recognise the work undertaken by students, staff and members of the local community.

Nominated by students, the Academic Staff Award goes to the lecturer who has engaged, motivated and inspired students over the past year. Among several nominations for Dr Atkins, the one that stood out said,

‘Aside from his fantastic nature, he goes above and beyond to support students. With his door always open, he's kind and considerate of each student's creativity. Not only does he bring excitement to each lesson and inspire students, but he's down to earth. There is no filter, and students can trust in him as a fellow writer. He's given up his free time continuously to support students on external projects and offers advice not typical of a lecturer. He cares so much about the wellbeing for students, he's even designing a mindfulness course to support everyone. He's the first teacher that has allowed me to adapt my work and think outside the box. He truly deserves this award and I want to thank him for every single thing he has done over the last three years.’

The acting Head of the Department of English and Creative Writing, Dr Jane Kinglsey-Smith said ‘We were thrilled when Tim Atkins joined our Creative Writing team in 2017. Not only is he a brilliant poet, he is also an extraordinary teacher, full of innovative ideas about how to make our programme and the student experience even better. We are all delighted that his commitment to supporting students and helping them to achieve their best has been recognised by this award. He’s an inspiration.’
