Dr MichaƂ P. Garapich, Senior Lecturer at the University of Roehampton, has won a DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) award for a fellowship at CCÉAE (Centre canadien d’études allemandes et européennes) at the University of Montreal.

His stay as Visiting Scholar relates to publication of sections of his award-winning book Dzieci Kazimierza (Czarne 2019) in Sociologie et Societes Journal, translated by top Polish French translator Laurence Dyèvre.

Dr. Garapich will deliver workshops on his own experience in family research and a keynote lecture on intimate anthropology, auto-ethnography, and thorny issue of writing books about his own family.

Dzieci Kazimierza has received the prestigious Historical Book of the Year award (by weekly magazine Polityka) in 2020.

The book crosses genres of history, auto-ethnography, anthropology and critical genealogical research. Drawing on author’s family history, the book dwells on sexual violence among Polish gentry, social construction of kinship and illegitimacy, class and intergenerational trauma.

Using both historical, archive records with participant observation and auto-ethnography, the book interrogates spaces of silence and omissions in ‘formal’ family accounts.

His guest lecture – ‘Digging and Writing – reflections on intimate anthropology and autoethnographic narratives' – takes place at the University of Montreal on 1st December.
