Piloted during the 2017-18 academic year, ‘Creative Arts in the Community’ is one of the new modules on the MA Children’s Literature programme. It focuses on the practical application of students’ skills in literary analysis and critical thinking to independent, creative projects, designed and developed in conjunction with professional arts practitioners at Battersea Arts Centre.

Working in collaboration with producers at Battersea Arts Centre, students on the module gain hands-on experience in arts management, project planning, design, and development, and in working with professionals and children from within the university’s local community.

The module is designed to engage students in their own creative practice and to encourage them to develop from scratch a creative idea that appeals to them, whether it is a picturebook, a creative writing piece, or even a board game.

The collaboration between the Department of English and Creative Writing and Battersea Arts Centre reinforces the University’s commitment to enhancing employment opportunities for students.

>Dr Ian Kinane, Lecturer in English Literature and the module convener, says that “our students are not just supported in terms of their academic work, but also in terms of their careers and their professional lives. The great advantage of a module like this is that students gain contacts with industry experts, and that they get to choose how they wish to be assessed. The collaborative process has been hugely rewarding for all involved”.
