Roehampton’s Emerita Professor Theresa Buckland elected Fellow of the British Academy

The School of Arts is delighted to announce that Emerita Professor of Dance History and Ethnography Theresa Buckland has today (22/07/2022) been elected to the Fellowship of the British Academy. The honour is in recognition of her contribution to dance scholarship working across the arts, humanities and social sciences.
Founded in 1902, the British Academy is the UK’s national academy for the humanities and social sciences. It is a Fellowship of over 1600 of the leading minds in these subjects from the UK and overseas. Current Fellows include the classicist Professor Dame Mary Beard, historian Professor Sir Simon Schama and philosopher Professor Baroness Onora O’Neill, while previous Fellows include Sir Winston Churchill, Seamus Heaney and Beatrice Webb. The Academy is also a funding body for research and a forum for debate and engagement.
Prof Buckland joined Roehamtpon in 2013, and despite retiring in August 2020 she remains research active. Her specialism is dance history – particularly 19th century and early 20th century British dance – as well as dance anthropology and folk dance. Recent research output has included the development of the modern waltz, issues of gender in 1970s morris dancing and dance, ritual, and religion in the 19th century.
On hearing of her election Professor Buckland commented: “It was such a wonderful surprise and I'm deeply honoured. I think I'm the first Fellow in the UK to come from the discipline of Dance. Of course it's also important and fitting that I'm a member of the universally acknowledged finest research department in Dance - long may the department go from strength to strength.”
