This course offers all students the option of a one-year paid work placement, to boost your employability even further. If you choose this route, you will take the placement following year two of your course, and then return to complete your degree.

A placement year is the perfect opportunity to gain valuable work experience, to build on the career skills we will teach you on this degree. The connections you make on the placement will improve your career prospects further, and equip you with the skills you need to secure graduate-level employment.

How we support you

The University's Placement and Work Experience Team are experts at helping you to secure a placement. They will work closely with you from the start, helping you research potential employers, discover placement opportunities, create and pitch your CV, and will coach you to perform well in interviews. We aren't able to guarantee a placement, but our sector-leading advisors will give you the best possible chance of securing one.

We understand that your plans might change once you start your programme. If you decide not to do a placement, you will have the option of completing the three year version of your programme.

Whatever your choice, you will have access to many opportunities for work experience through our Placement and Work Experience Team, and access to face-to-face and 24/7 online careers support.

On our BA Politics and International Relations, our priority is ensuring that you graduate with a professional skillset. This incorporates;

  • Through our core modules, students will learn in class how to apply the skills of negotiation in different situations and how to apply leadership and communication skills. 
  • A solid practical dimension too - you will receive a strong grounding in the conceptual and theoretical approaches to the study of politics, and in the sources and methods used in political analysis.

These three strands will ensure that you become informed and active global citizens, who are not afraid to question the structures of power which shape our world.

How you'll learn

Throughout the course, our assessment methods encompass a diverse range of approaches to gauge students' comprehension and practical skills. These assessments include written examinations, research project presentations, and essays. Additionally, you can take participate in practical assessments involving research and data collection. This ensures a comprehensive understanding of the theoretical concepts and hands-on applications, preparing students for a well-rounded exploration of politics and international relations.

Graduates of BA Political and International Relations will be prepared to go into various careers including: politics (research, campaigning, policy work, civil service), publishing, teaching, journalism, business management, law, media, advertising and public relations, community and social services, and heritage or cultural management.
